RATHLIN SOUND MARITIME FESTIVAL 2017 - FRI 2 JUN

Drontheims and Currachs
Friday 2nd June – Sunday 4th June
Afternoon - Beautiful locally-built traditional boats are the essence of the Festival, adding extra class and style. Weather - and challengers! - permitting, there will also be sailing and racing.

Friday 2nd June – Sunday 4th June
The currachs Colmcille and Mamoch Mor, living history at the festival
See these magnificent traditional boats bring a taste of live maritime history to the Festival. Watch them race, visit, step aboard and have a go at rowing. There’s a selfie in there somewhere!

Arrival of the Vikings - late afternoon
Ardglass Vikings return to the island once again with the evocative imagery of the longboat, swords and helmets and, over the weekend mock fighting along the beach. Well known throughout Northern Ireland for their fundraising for charity (not a traditional Viking activity) and for their participation in the successful US TV series ‘Vikings’, Rathlin is pleased to welcome them back to its shores.

Evening Throwing Line Competition, Seafront, early evening
Rathlin fisherman Benji McFaul will be out and about on the seafront with a fun line-throwing competition open to all

A Light on the Stacks
Tuesday 30th May & Friday 2nd June West Light Seabird Centre, 9.00pm-10.30pm,
The West Light Seabird Centre will open late for visitors to experience both the sunset and Rathlin West's famous red light coming on for the night. Come along and enjoy the special atmosphere of this dramatic lighthouse location at dusk, with the light casting its glow across the sea and the stacks and cliffs of one of the biggest seabird breeding colonies in Western Europe. Free entry, places limited to 20, advance booking essential. Contact Alison McFaul on 079 8061 0345 or alison.mcfaul@rspb.org.uk.
