RATHLIN SOUND MARITIME FESTIVAL 2017 - THU 1 JUN

Rockpooling on Rathlin Island
Rathlin Harbour 11am-1:30pm
Join Ulster Wildlife’s Living Seas Team and The Causeway Coast & Glens Heritage Trust for a rockpool exploring adventure. First we will take a walk to discover the marine life that inhabits the island. Rathlin Island is a great site for family rockpooling with dozens of different seaweeds, beautiful beadlet anemones and plenty of opportunity to find crabs, fish, sea urchins and other marine life hiding between the rocks. Please check the forecast beforehand and dress suitably. Walking boots/Wellingtons/sturdy shoes are highly recommended. (Bring a snack) For further information contact 028 2075 2100

2pm HMS Drake commemoration event: St Thomas’s Church
Maritime historian Ian Wilson and others will tell the story of HMS Drake, and what else was going on in Rathlin Sound on the chaotic day the warship was torpedoed and later sunk in Church Bay. Surrounded by an exhibition of images and information about the ship, the afternoon will include entertainment from Rathlin singers and musicians, promising a feast of island culture and history.

7.30pm An Sgoth - from tree to sea: a film with Ian Stephen, Manor House
The story of one man’s passion to build a full size Sgoth Niseach (The Lewis dipping lugsail boats that used to sail out of Port of Ness at the butt (top) of Lewis) An Sulaire (the Gannet) is now maintained by Falmadair, North Lewis Maritime Society for which Ian is a volunteer skipper. Ian will introduce the film and afterwards lead a discussion on issues of community boats.
