RATHLIN SOUND MARITIME FESTIVAL 2018 - THURSDAY 31 MAY
The return of the highly popular Rathlin Sound Maritime Festival for 2018 - the sixth time for this festival encompassing both Rathlin and Ballycastle, and of course the water between.
All day “Clowning about by the Sea” with special performance at 1.00pm with circus leader Jim Webster. Watch, join in, learn to juggle and more with Streetwise Community Circus, Seafront
2.00pm – 4.00pm “Fishing for Words” Creative writing workshop in The Manor House with Bernie McGill. Spaces limited please phone The Manor House to secure a place 02820760046
7.00pm “The Watch House” readings with Bernie McGill, author of The Watch House, a novel set on Rathlin. Bernie is joined in conversation with Margot McCuaig, writer, film-maker and part-time Rathlin resident, St Thomas’s Church.
9pm – 10.30pm “A Light on the Stacks” West lighthouse seabird centre open evening. Witness the sun going down in the company of auks, fulmars and kittiwakes, then watch the West Light come alive. Free entry; donations very much appreciated
Mon 28th – Sun 3rd June 11am – 3.30am daily Shipwreck exhibition displaying artefacts salvaged from the waters around Rathlin Island, a moving reminder of the ever present risk to life on the sea. Richard Branson Centre
Saturday 26th May - Sunday 3rd June “Kindness Rocks”. Look out for a scattering of small hand-painted rocks around Rathlin’s roads, pathways and seafront. Join in the hunt and post your photos on the dedicated Facebook page “Rathlin Kindness Rocks”
Friday 25th May – Sunday 3rd June SS Lochgarry exhibition, featuring images and information on SS Lochgarry, one of Ireland’s most popular recreational diving wrecks, St Thomas’s Church
Friday 25th May – Sunday 3rd June Yarn bombing where local knitters and crotchetiers will yarn bomb the harbour area. Panels will be sewn together and all pieces donated to support refugees.
Friday 25th May – Sunday 3rd June Drontheims and currachs. Over the festival our beautiful locally-built traditional boats such as Drontheims and Currachs will be in Rathlin’s waters
Friday 25th May – Sunday 3rd June ‘Mamoch Mor’ Currach leaves Ballycastle for Rathlin at 5.30pm. This community-managed boat brings a taste of live maritime history to the festival.
Friday 25th May – Sunday 3rd June “Literally a Littoral Litter Wall”, a display of plastic items, flotsam and jetsam found on Rathlin’s shores which have made their way into the nooks and crannies of the stone wall in front of Kinramer Cottage towards the West Light.
