9/11 Message in a Bottle

Thursday 8 September 2011

An island resident made a timely and interesting discovery while out walking on the north side recently.

A letter in a bottle washed up on the shore proved to have been sent from the USA on the 12th September 2001. The message was very faded from the sun, but with some patient work, it has been largely deciphered.

"I throw this in the North
Atlantic Ocean Sept 12, 2001.
If found, please write to me.
Mary Ann [?] Harper
5399 [?] Suwannee Rd
Weeki Wachee, FL 34607
I am interested in knowing
if this ever reaches land and/or
is retrieved."

Given that apparantly it takes about three or four months for something to cross the Atlantic, it is likely that the bottle was sitting on the north shore for some time, and the fact that it was found so close to the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks give it added poignancy.

Apparently the sender of the message is no longer at the address given, so if anyone out there by any chance has any information about the sender, please let us know!
