DOE Rathlin Island European Site Management Scheme

Monday 17 December 2012

The Department of Environment's new Rathlin Island European Marine Site Management Scheme Consultation Report has been published. The deadline for the submission of responses is 4 March 2013. The full document is available here. The RDCA has received a limited number of hard copies of this report, and will be distributing these to island households shortly.

The DOE stated that "Rathlin Island Special Area of Conservation (SAC) and Special Protection Area (SPA) are part of a network of conservation areas across Europe (known as the Natura 2000 network). These European sites have been designated under the Habitats and Birds Directives and their designations bring statutory responsibilities for public bodies to safeguard the nature conservation interests of the site. This draft consultation scheme aims to provide management guidance to ensure that the marine nature conservation interests of the island are sustained and managed in harmony with the socio-economic interests of the area. The Department seeks views on the objectives contained within this Draft Scheme."
