Official Opening of New Pontoons
Tuesday 15 October 2013
The new pontoons were officially opened on 2nd October by the Agriculture and Rural Development Minister, Michelle O’Neill MLA, and Cllr Cara McShane, Chair of Moyle District Council. The pontoons were largely funded by the Rural Development Programme. This new development greatly increases the capacity of the harbour, and will facilitate many more visitors to the island in the future.
The Minister said: “A key aim of the Rural Development Programme is to create high quality tourist facilities in rural areas and this is an excellent example of how that is possible.”
“The project will provide appropriate modern pontoon facilities for those engaged in water-based tourism such as sailing, kayaking etc and will increase visitor numbers to the Island and provide a much needed economic boost for local businesses.”
The Minister also took the opportunity to meet with local farmers and fishermen to discuss the difficulties they face working on an island.
