Socio-economic Development Worker Job Opportunity

Monday 4th October 2021

The RDCA is pleased to announce the advertisement for a Socio-economic Development Worker for a new post to work with the LIFE RAFT project - Rathlin Acting For Tomorrow: Removing invasive non-native ferrets and rats from the Rathlin Island Special Protection Area.

Rathlin Island is Northern Ireland’s only inhabited offshore island, with a permanent community of around 160 people. Rathlin is of great importance for wildlife at both national and EU levels, but this wildlife is under threat from invasive non-native ferrets and rats.

The aim of the LIFE RAFT project is to safeguard this wildlife by eradicating both the ferret and rat populations from the island, whilst embedding sound biosecurity measures so as to prevent their return/reestablishment. The project will strengthen existing local pride in, and stewardship of, the island’s natural heritage and create significant socioeconomic opportunities for a sustainable future.

Success will require a multi-disciplinary approach covering technical operations, community engagement and collaborative working across the project partnership and with key external stakeholders

About this job:
Experience of predator eradication projects on other islands has shown significant opportunities for socio-economic by-products throughout the project lifetime. Learning from those experiences, this project will include from the beginning the resources to identify and develop the valuable socio-economic opportunities, adding confidence and strength to the project.

The person appointed to this post will design and implement a five year programme unique to Rathlin Island, to identify, strengthen and deliver the socio-economic benefits the LIFE RAFT project may present, and do so in accordance with the values and aspirations that matter most to the community.
