Who Wants To Be A Millionnaire? Event

Friday 1 February 2013

Who wants to be a millionaire?
The question was asked in Bruce’s Kitchen on Saturday evening, 26th January, and George (Rathlin), Denis (Ballycastle) and Collette (Inishowen) were gently encouraged to try their skills. All made a good job of answering questions, though nobody actually went home a penny richer. Prizes were given in crisps and chocolates (off to Weight Watchers now), and although Collette successfully climbed to the top of the questions list, Rathlin had some additional support from a junior team (Ryan and Pablo) and won the greatest quantity. Congratulations!

The rest of the questions on community matters, including services on the island, oil and gas and renewable energy production, and much more were answered by up to 35 islanders and the results were instantly available for all to see on the screen. A more detailed analysis will be available shortly. Thank you to all who participated patiently and helped make the evening enjoyable. 84% of participants said this was a good way of asking questions so there may be more to come in the future. Particular thanks to Peter Osborne, from Rubicon Consulting, who worked with questions he’d been given and was an able, and very generous Quizmaster for the evening. We owe him a return visit on a warm, dry weekend! Thanks also to those who provided the food and the good music – all ‘helped the medicine go down’ nicely.

A particular highlight of the evening was an award made to Dominic McCurdy by Michael Cecil and Patricia McCurdy, on behalf of the RDCA. Dominic retired at the end of 2012 after many years of ferrying passengers and goods safely across the Rathlin Sound. The RDCA presented Dominic with a certificate to honour this successful service record, as well as tickets to a show in Belfast for Dominic and Kay. We hope the show, and a long retirement, will be enjoyed by both.

Peace lll Networking project:
Fourteen people from Rathlin, Ballycastle and Inishowen came together on the island on Saturday 26th January for the second part of a Peace lll funded Cross Border Networking project. Working in the Richard Branson Centre, participants shared photographs from their communities to deepen each other’s understanding of the challenges and opportunities in each place, and then had a short walk to Mill Bay. Once again the three groups found much in common and intend to continue developing practical connections. The group is particularly keen to support the Rathlin Sound Maritime Festival with joint activities. Most of the visitors stayed over on Saturday evening (thanks to the Camping Barn, and support from the Harbour Cafe) and were able to be involved in the event in Bruce’s Kitchen – Who wants to be a Millionaire. We’ll try to forgive the Inishowen contestant for answering more questions correctly! The next sessions, in Corrymeela and Inishowen are now being planned.
