There was a very busy clean of the beach and harbour area last week, with volunteers through Corrymeela joining the school children and other island residents as well as staff and volunteers from the West Light Seabird Centre on the beach. Meanwhile Council staff worked with ferry crew to clear material from the harbour area, with old tyres, oil cans and rope being removed amongst other items.

The Corrymeela group were students from the "Presby Cats" Presbyterian collegiate ministry in Montana State University, and the whole group of volunteers enthusiastically tackled the beach, which was in a particularly bad state after the winter gales. A quote from the group's blog sums up their experience well: "there’s no better place in the world to gather garbage than Rathlin Island on a sunny day".
