Providence Resources has issued a media release regarding their oil and gas exploration interests in the Rathlin Basin.

Dr Jonathan Wills, a member of Shetland Islands Council and of the Shetland Charitable Trust, will give an illustrated talk in the Parochial Hall on Sunday 16th September at 8.00.

Providence Resources has put up a section on their website concerning their proposed work under the exploration licences covering Rathlin Island and the surrounding offshore areas.

Providence Resources has informed the RDCA that a representative of the company will be coming to the island on Monday 20th February, and will be available in the Parochial Hall from 11.30 to respond to any further questions about the aerial survey of the island scheduled to take place next week. A cargo vessel recently struck one of the islands in the Tristan da Cunha group in the South Atlantic, and an oil slick is threatening the island's tourist and fishing industries and environment. Many Rathlin island residents attended the talks given last year by Brad Robson who had lived on Tristan for a year, and will no doubt be shocked and dismayed at the news.

There will be an important public meeting next Tuesday 22nd March with representatives from Providence Resources, including their chief executive Tony O'Reilly Jnr. The meeting is intended to give island residents the opportunity to get more information about the petroleum licence issue, and to ask questions of the company intending to drill on Rathlin.
