BIG Lottery Closing Evaluation Event

Thursday 29 January 2015

There was a very positive evaluation event held last Saturday evening for the ending of the island’s BIG Lottery funded project. Hosted by Peter Osborne - formerly of the BIG Lottery and currently chair of the Community Relations Council – and with over forty island residents attending, the evaluation element of the evening was rounded off with a quiz, food and live traditional music.

First Aid Training

Thursday 29 January 2015

The first aid training course held last Tuesday in the Parochial Hall was very successful. Organised with Bisp Training, the course covered all the basics of first aid, but with a particular emphasis on paediatric first aid - courtesy of last year's baby boom! Many thanks to Ian Harkness of Bisp Training, for giving the course, and to Janice Bisp for her help with organising it. First aid skills are recognised by all Rathlin residents as being something that is particularly important for an island community, and you can't have too many people on the island who are qualified.

West Light Consultation

Friday 23 January 2015

On Monday, two of the people working on the redevelopment of the West Light held consultations with island residents, looking for information, stories and photographs of the light and the island. They are keen in particular to see more photographs, and to copy them for use in the new displays planned for the lighthouse. Below is a statement from them:

"Appeal for pictures of Rathlin West Light - can you help?

• Can you help with material for new displays in the West Light?

Congratulations to Suzy and Sarah and all involved in the opening of The Water Shed Café today. Open year-round and offering a wide range of teas, coffees and food, the Water Shed will no doubt be a valuable addition to the island's resources for residents and visitors alike. Good luck!

Threatened Closure of Dalriada Hospital

Friday 7 November 2014

As island residents will know, the Dalriada Hospital in Ballycastle has been earmarked by the Northern Health and Social Care Trust for "temporary" closure by the end of this month. The RDCA Committee is lending its full support to the campaign to reverse this decision. We are inviting Rathlin residents to join the protest outside the hospital on Wednesday 12th November between 12.45 and 1.30 (or longer if you prefer!) Those on Facebook may be aware that the community campaign against the hospital closure has its own group "Save the Dal", which keeps people up to date with a host of information and actions. There is also an online petition to the Minister here, or for those who prefer, there are hard copies of a petition in the shop, post office and the ferry office in Ballycastle as well as dozens of locations across the Moyle area.
