Macmillan Cancer Coffee Morning

The coffee morning in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support held on Friday 27 September was highly successful, with a hugely impressive £525 being raised for the charity. There was a great range of home-made buns and cakes brought along, and a very enjoyable time was had. Many thanks are due to Eileen Winter for encouraging the event.

True North - A Summer on Rathlin

Hugh McQuilkin RIP

The death has taken place of Hugh McQuilkin. Hugh was born and raised on Rathlin, and was the son of Johnny and Mary McQuilkin, and the brother of the late Sean McQuilkin. After working at sea for many years, Hugh settled in Belfast and passed away peacefully at home on 18th September. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family at this time.

Bernadette Taaffe RIP

Bernadette Taaffe passed away peacefully on Saturday at the Causeway Hospital. Our thoughts and prayers are with her family and friends at this time.

From September 2012 - August 2013 St Mary's Primary School was able to raise £714.70 for the school funds. A big thank you to all the islanders and friends on the mainland who took part in this collection. With the funds we had for the year we have been able to take the children on quite a few outings... both educational and fun! We have visited:

W5 in the Odyssey
Grand Opera House - "James and the Giant Peach"
Christmas Pantomine - "Cinderella"
Greenlight Gateway and North Coast outing
Belfast Zoo

Loughie McQuilkin's Book Launch

There was a huge turnout on Sunday for the launch of Loughie McQuilkin's book "Rathlin Reminiscences. Its People - Its Stories - Its Places". In the book, Loughie tells of island life and its people, and how life has slowly changed through the years but the island spirit still remains. The book draws on Loughie's well known in-depth knowledge of the island, and his famously good memory.

Congratulations to all the new tenants of Gort Beag - our new neighbours here in the Resource Centre! Today saw all the paperwork being completed, and the handing over of the keys to the new residents of the ten beautiful new houses.
